Support the Museum
You Can Help Us Enhance Our Museum!
Your contributions to the Friends of Fort Harrod will help the Kentucky State Parks Curator make vital updates to the Mansion Museum. Opened nearly a century ago, many of the Mansion Museum’s exhibits have been on display for decades. As a result, it is the desire of the curator to perform several updates to the museum and the exhibits. Some of these updates involve replacing aging display cases and other items of display furniture and signage, but it also involves improving the exhibits themselves with different artifacts and more comprehensive information.
Telling a Complete Story
We hope to support the museum as it seeks to provide more information on Harrodsburg’s history, both as the first permanent English settlement west of the Alleghenies and as a heavily trafficked area with the Native American tribes as well.
A complete story would also include more information on how women actively supported the development of the area. Women such as Jane Coomes, Ann McGinty, and many others were vital to the early settlement and establishment of the area There were other communities as well that were very involved in creating our local and regional history, and the museum would like to tell more of their stories as well.
Telling the Story Better
Technology has obviously progressed a long way in the decades since opening the museum, and we hope to leverage these improvements to provide more information in less space, and to encourage more interactivity with visitors of all ages.
Expanding Beyond the Museum
Using technologies available today, the Museum and Fort Harrod more broadly, can, with your support, develop audio and video presentations that can provide significantly more information on a number of topics. One scenario for these presentations would be having material for visitors to listen to as they drive to Fort Harrod. For example, a drive from Lexington may take an hour, and having these materials to listen to can help keep the whole family excited about what they will see when they arrive at the park!
