Iverson Wilson Memorial Marker

Honoring a Dedicated Caretaker of Fort Harrod Cemetery (1933–1939)

This interpretive marker at Old Fort Harrod State Park honors Iverson Wilson, who served as the caretaker of the Fort Harrod Pioneer Cemetery from 1933 to 1939. His work took place during an important era in the park’s history, when Harrodsburg and the Commonwealth of Kentucky were placing renewed emphasis on preserving early frontier sites.

As caretaker, Wilson oversaw the maintenance of one of Kentucky’s oldest and most significant burial grounds, ensuring that the fragile headstones, grounds, and historic layout were protected for future generations. Pioneer Cemetery contains hundreds of graves dating back to 1775, representing many of Harrodsburg’s earliest settlers. The dedication of individuals like Wilson played a crucial role in safeguarding this irreplaceable piece of Kentucky heritage.

Today, the marker stands as a tribute to his service and as a reminder that the preservation of history relies not only on the stories of the past, but also on those who devoted their time and effort to protecting it.
